Julian Stockwin was asked about the cover of The Admiral s Daughter in a recent interview:-

As usual, Geoff Hunt RSMA did a superb original painting on which the cover is based. It is almost Impressionistic in nature, and depicts a Royal Navy landing party going ashore on anti-smuggling patrol.
The amount of smuggling in those days was incredible. In 1783, it was estimated that of a quarter of all tea
smuggled into England and half of the illicit brandy entered by way of Cornwall and Devon.
