The famous Messerschmitt Bf 109 and the Spitfire were closely matched during the Battle of Britain but in terms of ease of  mass production, the German aircraft won hands down with over 33,000 being produced and with far less call on industrial capacity.

The prototype Bf 109VI is shown here in company with the civil Bf 108 Taifun which pioneered many of the structural feature and manufacturing techniques carried over so successfully to the 109. Ironically the prototype 109 was powered by a Rolls-Royce Kestrel engine as the German Junkers Jumo and Daimler-Benz lightweight aero engines were behind schedule
