This painting reflects the good old days of the great side-winding distant water trawlers from Hull and Grimsby. Sometimes large shoals of fish would congregate on certain grounds, leading to a scramble of ships to take advantage of the bounty. Aboard the foreground trawler they (the deckhands or deckies ) under the mate are preparing to hoist aboard the cod-end of the trawl net. The other trawler WILLIAM WILBERFORCE was a well-known ship, originally owned in Hull, but shown here under Grimsby registration.
